Tautavel Man was discovered at the "Caune
de l'Arago", one of the most important
sites in the World, in the small vine
growing Corbieres village of Tautavel.
The Museum displays unique prehistorical
collections that have been enhanced
by the latest museographical techniques.
In May 1905, Matisse and Derain discovered
Collioure, and from this moment on
"Fauvism" was born. From their walks,
the two painters recorded on canvas
images of the village, such as the
belltower, the castle, fishing nets
hung up to dry, boats leaving the
port, women mending nets ... and windows.
A "living Museum" based on reproductions
of 20 Matisse and Derain canvases
has been installed in the streets
of Collioure.
The town of Elne is an important archeological
centre, set above its old Roman fortifications
and overlooking the entire Roussillon
plain. The XIth century cathedral and
the marble cloister, built between the
XIIth and the XIV centuries, bear witness
to the important episcopal see. The
cloister is one of the marvels of Roussillon
art. A museum is dedicated to Etienne
Terrus, a painter native of Elne and
a friend of Maillol.
